Powersports vehicles are built to tear up trails and explore off-road. That kind of riding, while enjoyable, can be very hard on a vehicle. That’s why it’s so important that you maintain your powersports vehicle. Review Your Owner’s Manual

The most important resource you have when it comes to powersports vehicle maintenance is your owner’s manual. It contains detailed and specific information about how to best maintain your particular model. Be sure to consult the owner’s manual before performing any major maintenance/repair work. 

Oil

Engine oil helps to lubricate moving parts so that they don’t scrape against each other and cause damage. Check the engine oil in your powersports vehicle as often as the powersports vehicle recommends. Oil that feels black or sludgy has become too thick to do its job properly, while oil that feels gritty to the touch is full of metal shavings. Replace and replenish your vehicle’s engine oil as needed. 

Changing the Filters

The filters on your powersports vehicle have the important job of keeping harmful particles out of your engine. We recommend swapping out your oil filter every time you perform an oil change to make things easier on yourself. The air filter will need to be replaced every three or four oil changes. Finally, there’s the fuel filter. This filter doesn’t need to be changed very often, but you should still occasionally check to see if it’s still functioning.

Spark Plugs

Powersports vehicles use internal combustion engines, which require an initial spark to start. This spark is provided by the spark plug, so check the plug if your engine is having problems turning over. To remove your spark plug for inspection, start by disconnecting your battery and removing the engine cover. We recommend using a spark plug wrench to remove the part since this will reduce your risk of damaging it. Examine the plug. The metal gaps should be clean and dry, while the ceramic casing should be completely intact. If you don’t have prior engine maintenance experience, contact a service department for help replacing a defective spark plug.
